No. No more than being around your own neighborhood. (Provided you don't live in Baghdad)

Television is a business, like any other business. The goal is profitability.

Drama, tragedies, violence, disasters - would draw more attention than routine, pastoral, event less life.

Israel had its bad times. In the years 2001-2003 violence was at peak. These days are behind us. Since 2003 / 2004 the tourism has fully recovered to its peak numbers in 1999 - 2000.
You are more than welcome to get further clarifications, reassurance, comments.
The best way to feel really comfortable - ask visitors. Any one who had spent time in Israel would smile to the question of "how safe".

If there is no danger in a visit – why warn?
The state department was right in its warnings. When issuing danger warnings the state department researchers consider individuals being on their own, not accompanied by a local guide. A visitor who is not familiar could easily drive a rented car into the West Bank or Gaza. Settlers drive these roads, your rented car could easily be greeted by the soldiers at the road block and granted entry. Once being in the West Bank - one wrong turn looks worse than some of the "bad neighborhoods" of N.Y.C.
